ANTH 4995 - Travel Study

A flexible format that permits courses to be taught in various areas of the world. Cultures of the Himalayas. Concerned broadly with contemporary Himalayan culture. Focuses on Tibetan cultures and the Tibetan diaspora, and the Nepalese (Newari) culture of the Katmandu Valley. The goals for this course are: to acquaint the student with social, political and cultural features of this part of the world; to teach, through directed field experiences, how cultural anthropology is practiced; to understand how the process of tourism differs from the study of anthropology; how tourism, however it is practiced, changes in fundamental ways those subject to it.
