Social problems are the subject of controversy, such as that surrounding controversy may swirl around definitions (e.g., the social net and the poverty line), around degree of seriousness, about “causes,” and inevitably about solutions. Controversy also centers on the “proper” role of the social theorist and social scientist, observer only or activist as well?
