Department Overview

The Department of Visual Arts offers professional instruction in nine interrelated areas of study: art history, digital design, drawing, painting, photography, scientific media design, sculpture, transmedia and 3D graphics and animation. The Department of Visual Arts provides a vital educational environment where future artists and art historians explore the horizons of their own talents in an atmosphere of critical dialogue, rigorous artmaking and multiple media. Art, art history, design and animation majors will enroll in emphases focused on the acquisition of skills specific to their chosen professions in the context of the rich academic offerings of the entire university. Each student’s scholarly and creative work is infused with innovative technology, contemporary theory and professionalism. Education in the visual arts encompasses a comprehensive knowledge of and direct experience with the various media of digital design, drawing, painting, photography and sculpture. Supporting this enterprise is the development of an understanding of art and media theory, knowledge of methods and materials used in making art and design, and an appreciation for diverse approaches to visual culture, both contemporary and historical. Central to the practice of art history are critical writing and analysis. Graduating seniors receiving the BFA degree are required to participate in the BFA thesis exhibition during their last semester of study. These exhibitions are scheduled in the fall and spring terms only.
