The Department of Theatre, Film and Video Production offers a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) in Theatre, Film and Television with an emphasis in Art Direction and Production Design. The BFA provides training at a professional skill level, culminating in a comprehensive review that requires successful completion of a portfolio and/or thesis project. Students will work in their design area (scenery, costumes or lighting) on their own projects but will also assist on group projects; for example, departmental productions, television pilots and film projects. A professional internship is an emphasis requirement. Students will graduate from this emphasis with theoretical and historical perspectives, and hands-on experiences in art direction as well as theatre, film, media, venue and environment design. This prepares students to begin their careers with entry-level positions in theatre, film or television, concerts and design related industries or to enter graduate programs. All students pursuing this emphasis complete a total of at least 82 semester hours for the major. Students have opportunities to focus their studies in specific design areas (costume, scenery, lighting) in consultation with the design facul see detailed course requirements below. Each course must be completed with a grade of C (2.0) or better. At least 24 of the major semester hours must be earned at CU Denver. Students must also follow the College of Arts & Media’s general degree requirements .
Admission Procedures
Students seeking this BFA should apply to the university and be accepted under the Theatre, Film, and Television BFA program. No separate application to the department or portfolio submission is required for admission into the degree program and emphasis.
