The crisis of confidence in Europe and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Focuses on aesthetic and philosophical disillusionment and attempts to reorient European and American thinking, as well as upon reactions to World War I. Topics include Nietzsche, psychoanalysis, surrealism, and other intellectual and artistic movements. Prereq: Previous introductory history course or other introductory humanities course.
